Photojournalism
Sports Photography
Sports photography is capturing on film men and women who engage in all manner of different athletic activity from the Olympics to basketball to horseshoes.
Sports photography originally started as photojournalism but eventually gained its own status as an independent type of photography as sports gained in popularity and publications became devoted to it.
Some sports photographers are employed by publications but many of them are freelance photographers shooting film at sporting events and selling their photos to magazines and other publications.
Sports photography is generally shot with the aperture wide open to accommodate all the action for more dramatic shots. A longer lens and distance from the subject while keeping the lens wide open blurs that background and emphasizes the subject. A fast ISO film, a 400 or 800 is recommended.
