Products commercial photographers collect images of range from shoes to jewelry to women to grass seed. There is a whole range of products that need to be sold to the public and enough work available for the talented commercial photographer.
When photographing products for clients the photographer has to keep in mind exactly what the client wants. Product photography can be a tricky business because clients aren't always able to express themselves in a way that is helpful to the photographer. Photographers should encourage their clients to being a list if the want a significant amount of input into the shoot. A contract should be made, stating the exact requirements of the shoot so there are no questions about what to do.
Lighting is essential to excellent product photography. For smaller products a light tent should be used. It will cast light on all the parts not normally lit because of the products size. Also, depth of filed is very important for small product photography as well. An appropriate amount of distance between the subject and the photographer is crucial so there is no unnecessary blurring.
Commercial photography also involves shooting film of models who are wearing products to be sold. Portrait photography comes into play when photographing models. Being able to get the model relaxed and in a productive mood so that she and the product look good is essential for a productive photography shoot. The model could be a woman wearing lipstick or a dog wearing a collar. Whatever the circumstance, the model has to be receptive to the photographer for positive results.
Commercial photographers need to have different photography skills to accommodate many different clients. It can be difficult as many photographers specialize on one thing, and some commercial photographers do that, but the more work a photographer wants the more versatile he or she has to be.
