When going on vacation the rule of thumb is, go light. Worrying about what kind of camera to bring will only create stress. A light pocket camera of digital or film will do for almost any vacation or beach photography situation.
Vacation photos are usually color and more of a snapshot variety. Even if the vacationer doesn't care for snap shots, a low cost smaller sized camera can be purchased for decent prints.
For photographers who want slide film slide film has great color saturation and the cost is quite manageable.
It's a good idea to shoot a lot of film when on vacation. That way the more film you shoot then the more chances of having more great shots. Film isn't that expensive, and if you use a digital then you can preview before you commit to the memory card.
When in bright spots like on the beach, a fill flash is great to prevent washout of color and too dark shadows. Look at what you want to capture on film or digital and see where the shadows are. If the sun is behind the subject and the shadows are in front a fill flash would be helpful. That way the darkness on a face or obscuring details will be brightened and add necessary light to the shot.
Develop roll film or instant cameras right away as heat can deteriorate or fog film.
